All About Everything.
There are so many things you will want to know about your new school. There are the day to day organisational matters you will want to know about, there are all the new subjects you can look forward to, and you will want to know what to do if anything goes wrong, or you just need a wee bit of support, especially while you are settling in.
Getting to Shimna
Many of our students walk to school, and the back gate into the park means that it's a beautiful way to start your day: mountains; trees; rivers; the sea. Many of our students come by the buses that deliver you right into our school grounds: Newry; Kilkeel; Ballynahinch; Aughlisnafin/Castlewellan; Downpatrick. Every bus has bus prefects to make sure everyone travels safely. If you come by car, the easiest route is to be left off in Donard Park and enjoy the walk in the back gate.
We are proud of our uniform, and you have some choice in what to wear. You can choose any Shimna item for your top layer: blazer; cardigan; jumper; quarter zip. Our Shimna outdoor coat is the ONLY coat to wear with our uniform. We want you to be warm, dry and comfortable. You have a choice of grey trousers or skirt, and you wear your shirt, tie and black school shoes every day. Our uniform is gender neutral. Wear your uniform well, and have a nag free life!
Meeting Your Class
Our form classes are called after the mountains: Donard, Commedagh; Bearnagh; Meelbeg; Spelga. On the first day, year 8s have the school to themselves, and spend the day getting to know everyone in their form class, and finding their way around before all the other students return. Your form teacher will stay with you right through until year 12, so you will always have someone to turn to if you have any worries, problems or concerns.
Our canteen serves breakfast every morning, then pancakes, tea cakes and cheesy toast for break and a full menu during our three lunch sittings. We have a cashless paying system and everyone eats together whether they bring a packed lunch or eat from the canteen menu. New this year: pizza slices for break and home made soup for lunch, cooking with the veg from our very own school vegetable patch and composting with our food waste.
